Who are you?

Reporting to the Shop Lead, the incumbent provides overall coordination and management of activities and staff in the Portage la Prairie shop department. When specific project issues arise, incumbents may coordinate directly with Project Leaders.

What will you do?

  • The following are the general duties of these positions but are not inclusive of all the detailed tasks that may be required

  • Supervising shop staff by providing expertise, training, work and guidance

  • Providing input into assigning the duties of shop staff to operate the department at an optimum level

  • Providing input into ordering shop supplies as required for client and internal projects

  • Managing relationships with contractors

  • Oversee maintenance of buildings, grounds, vehicles and equipment

  • Provide technical support for research and development projects in areas such as machining, welding, sheet metal work, carpentry, painting, fabrication under the direction of the Project Leaders and Shop Lead

  • Provide problem solving solutions and decision-making authority with accountability and with innovation expected in decisions

  • Assist Project Leaders with estimating time and materials for projects

  • Provide information and guidance to engineers regarding tolerances of shop equipment

  • Ensure shop is operated in a safe manner to protect staff, clients, and contractors by monitoring safety environment and providing safety training to staff
  • Reporting and documentation of issues and processes

What do you need to succeed?

  • Advanced knowledge of shop equipment use
  • General knowledge – supervisory skills, blueprint and work instruction reading/interpretations
  • Agricultural machinery operation is desirable
  • Problem solving skills – troubleshooting issues
  • Diploma or certificate with 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Journeyperson trade
